Your staff are not psychics. State fully how the work needs to be done, and the various steps to get there. Be open to questions. If the instructions are not clear, make it clear that anyone can come talk to you about it.

Make sure your team knows that you appreciate the work. It takes little time to write a note saying “thank you” or “good job” and it may mean quite a bit to a person that’s worked hard the whole day. And, the impact that they can have on morale – and by extension, productivity – can be dramatic.

Don’t be a know it all in regards to leadership. While your ideas might be great, remember that helpful people can always add to them or bring different perspectives. They will be able to give you pointers with your plans and ideas.

Be someone who is known for being easily approachable. A lot of people think that trying to intimidate others is what you can do to help them realize that you’re the one who is the boss. This is far from the truth and will make your job much harder. Let subordinates know that they can bring you any concerns they have.

When speaking to your team, make sure you are prepared. You want to have thought of questions they might have. Sit down and think of a good response to each question. Your team will appreciate that you are able to answer their questions. This is also a time-saving skill for being an effective leader.

Create company-wide goals. Use annual goals to motivate your employees to strive for greatness. Don’t simply set them up then forget about them. Hold monthly goal meetings to discuss everyone’s progress.

It pays to dedicate a specific amount of time daily to assessing progress of the team. Ask a few team members to join in this reflection if you’d like. Be open to suggestions, discuss changes that should be made and work on fostering relationships.

You should do a lot more listening than talking. Being a great leader starts with listening to what your team has to say. Hear your employees when they talk to you. Even the bad things. Listen to their opinions about both the buyers and the products. You might be a little surprised at the amount you will learn from those who work for you.

Synergy is important in leadership. You must set goals for your personal life. Understand just what your goals in business are. Things are best when there is alignment and overlap between your personal goals and your organization’s ideals. You always want to be able to work on both at the same time. If you are unable to do this, you won’t have as much enthusiasm.

One of the most effective and challenging skills you can develop as a leader in business is that of listening to your subordinates. In many cases, your workers will have great additions or changes to an idea that you may have. After people listen to what you need to tell them, listen back to see if they have anything to add so you can be more successful.

Leaders must separate what is currently happening vs what is inside their head. While a relationship exists between the two, there must be distinct boundaries. If something is on your mind, then it needs to get out of your mind. Write it down someplace else so that you are able to put your mind to the tasks at hand.

Work hard to make great decisions. Effective leaders are usually talented at making the right decision. You’ve got to learn how to take risks. If you can do so quickly, using your knowledge and intuition, then others will want to follow you. Also, never second-guess your decisions. You have to be aware that some decisions don’t work, and learn from that.

Always lead by example. Your title alone should not be enough. If you require that employees are on time to work and have a good attitude, you must exhibit these traits too. Nobody respects hypocritical behavior. Always be a person that can be respected.

Being a good leader means not criticizing an employee’s mistake, and instead helping the employee to learn from it in a positive way. Take the time to share how the decision affected things in a way that wasn’t positive. Help them to see good paths to take to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Now, you have the tools you need in order to become an effective leader. When you are looking for guidance, look to them. This will enable you to be a great leader, and will also help your team and the company as a whole.
